Artist Residency & Art-Science Exhibition
The Art of Eco-conscious Colour’ exhibition at the Cambridge Festival exhibition in March 2026 took inspiration from Diana Scarborough’s one-year art-science residency ‘Tailored Pigments’ creating printing inks sustainably. In addition to sketchbooks documenting her process of creative explorations, she included art prints, an interactive soundscape in a lab coat and a film ‘The Art of Eco-conscious Colour’ available on Vimeo.
Her AIR was funded by a BBSRC grant (UKRI) as a collaboration between researchers and industry.
With a sustainable heart of growing colour from bacteria, multimedia outcomes as process were her response to the innovative textile dyeing processes and pigments and plant-based processes she learnt from her scientists and researcher collaborators:- Fruk Lab, (Dept. of Chemical Engineering & Biotechnology), Norwich-based company Colorifix and the Lifefabs Institute.
Seaweed inspirations came from a textile designer and researcher Alberte Holmø Bojesen, a.k.a Birdie. During her residency in November 2025, seaweed was harvested from Saltdean in Brighton as a sustainable potential pigment source. Visit Armadillo Central’s blog ‘Algae Rhythms’ to find out more.
