Moontopia Album – Jun 2025

Our Moon Inspired Album

‘Eleven new tracks have been created for our ‘Moontopia’ album featuring music inspired by and including space ‘sounds’ recorded by spacecraft in the vicinity of moons of Jupiter and Saturn. Go to Bandcamp for the complete experience! Like our previous albums “Moontopia” it is a fusion of art and science and a type of dreaming of how art and science can tell the great stories of our time.

The album features music by Kim Cunio, sonified data, audio and a song. a moon walk, space ‘sounds’ of plasma waves recorded during flybys of Jovian moon, data from Enceladus and a space probe during its descent to the surface of the moon Titan. We also include ‘data as audio’  from the Halley VLF receiver, on a Full Moon (3 Jul 2012.  “Yuè ér míng” (track 11) is a traditional Chinese Han lullaby which literally means “Moon is bright”. Sung by long-time collaborator Heather Lee. It deals with our greatest relationship with the Moon.

Artwork by Diana Scarborough for this album as digital collage with an analogue ‘feel’ of the moon landing inspired by the music and myth-making journeys to different moons. Using a combination of scanned 1970’s satellite images of Antarctica, sourced from the British Antarctic Survey, her own paintings and creative commons images, she has created a unified visual style, adding emotional weight, myth and science.. even  evoking an imaginary creature!
